Medicare. The final frontier.. Or is it? It definitely can be for those who understand the many medical coverage choices available in their area. A few tidbits to keep in mind before we explain the 5 basic steps to helping you choose the best plan for YOU. First, Medicare varies by geographical area, more specifically by County and State, so make sure you understand what plan options are available where you reside. Second, coverage options and costs vary from person to person, depending on their medical and prescription needs, so beware of comparing with your neighbor or friends.
They may have a different circumstance than you. Medicare is not “one size fits all” medical coverage. Now let’s walk through the 5-Steps to help you choose: 1.If you have End Stage Renal Disease, which means you are undergoing Dialysis treatments, you will NOT be able to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan (HMO or PPO). Please contact Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227 so they can explain your options. 2.Do you have Medicare Parts A and B? You will know this if your Medicare card has dates next to both parts. If you have not received your card, please contact Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 3.Is there a valid Medicare Election option to use for your enrollment.
If not, you might have to wait to enroll during the yearly Annual Enrollment Period between October 15 and December 7. 4.Do you have Physicians / Doctors that you want to ensure you are able to continue seeing? If so, you need to make sure the new plan you enroll in allows you access to see these preferred providers. 5.Do you take medications? If so, please keep in mind your Medicare plan choice will have limitations to prescription drugs and your out of pocket costs will differ by plan. Make sure the insurance agent that is assisting with your plan choice discusses these differences with you. If you follow these basic steps, you will be on your way to a great experience choosing your new Medicare plan.Good luck and stay healthy!
